The Talkies, Wednesday July 6th 2011, KUSF In Exile

Date 6 July 2011

On January 18th of 2011 the University of San Francisco shut down SF’s only student & community radio station KUSF, why? Due to a 3.7 million dollar profit/hostile corporate takeover!

KVMR’s Meri St. Mary talks with KUSF’s DJ volunteers Irwin Swirnoff, Kenya Lewis & attorney Alan Korn to get the 411 on how, in a bold Kafkaesque move, a private corporation bought the station.

KUSF has a 34 year history, is broadcast in 12 different languages and is one of the leading voices in broadcasting independent music (giving exposure to thousands upon thousands of bands). This case is not alone, this is a scary trend, listen in to hear about it!

The Talkies Friday June 24th 2011, From Russia With Love...

Date 24 June 2011

KVMR hosted a delegation of Russian civic officials from Kandalaksha, a city in the Murmansk region of the country above the Arctic Circle. They’d been in Nevada County as part of the Open World exchange program, spending a week meeting with city and county government officials, as well as a visit with some State Assembly members in Sacramento. We talked with them about how community radio is volunteer-driven radio, on air and off, and the differences between KVMR and mainstream media, corporate-owned stations and commercial radio.

Then we invited them into our live on-air studios for an hour discussion about their impressions of America and their government, which has a decidedly younger look than that in the U.S. Find out how by listening:

What the Federal Funding Flap Means to KVMR, March 11th

Date 11 March 2011

As you may have heard, the House of Representatives zeroed out all funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This would have drastic effects on all public media, particularly community radio stations.

Because of our excellent track record and service, KVMR has been awarded over $110,000 in CPB funds this year, approximately 12 % of our budget. (In contrast, only 2% of National Public Radio’s budget comes directly from CPB).

You can learn more about federal funding of community radio and public media in this special “Talkies” program with Ginny Berson, vice president and director of services for the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, discussing the funding crisis on “The Talkies” with KVMR General Manager David Levin and Program Director Steve Baker.

You can find out about the national campaign to preserve federal funding for public media at 170millionAmericans.org
