The Underground Sound - June 21 2012 - John Silvers Interview

Date 25 June 2012

Listen in as Meri St. Mary talks with San Francisco’s own JOHN SILVERS, drummer, bike messenger & insightful human being, who has played with legendary SF bands The Dils, Chris Isaak, Chimneylions & his current project Streetlions. We cover a lot of territory in this hour chat with John from his joining the Dils in 1978 a band he loved to changing the names of his favorite love songs to Clint Eastwood & Bruce Lee (cuz, ya know, it wasn’t “punk” to do love songs) their “World Domination Tour” & how he thought Chip & Tony were the punk Everly Brothers. The Dils also impressed John Cale enough that he wanted to produce them after they played What Goes On, but again, that wasn’t to be. You can see/hear John Silvers in the punk documentary “Louder, Faster, Shorter” & he has many a humorous tale of behind the scenes live shows including doing benefits for Coal Miners & Laguna Honda Hospital. John is a funny, self deprecating & kind person who tells it like it is & was, we also touch on some dearly departed including Olga de Volga & John’s favorite punk drummer Tim Mooney. John Silvers is a survivor & a hell of a nice guy who loved the early diversity of punk & still lives it, (we all hate those hard core bullies!) Now git yer dub on, go see the Streetlions, oh & ride yer bike!!!

The Underground Sound - May 24 - WINSTON TONG of Tuxedomoon Interview

Date 26 May 2012

Listen in as Meri St. Mary talks with WINSTON TONG a SF native actor/playwright, visual artist, puppeteer & singer/songwriter. He is best known for his vocal work in TUXEDOMOON, and for winning an Obie Award in puppetry for “Bound Feet” in 1978 (about a rather atrocious practice of male oppression towards women in a rather twisted idea of “beauty”). Winston joined Tuxedomoon in 1977 sporadically recording & performing with the group as well as recording solo material including the electro-pop dance album “Theoretically Chinese” in 1985. Currently Winston is on a “humble little quest” translating Baudelaire & recites two pieces during the show. We cover all sorts of subjects ranging from gods, goddesses, bullies, devils, murderers, vampires, politics, poetry & all manners of the “ Flowers of Evil.” Joining us in the conversation is Lx Rudis another SF native who is teaching analogue & regales us with stories from technology to his bohemian upbringing & more. Of note is the 2008 book “Music for Vagabonds: The Tuxedomoon Chronicles” by Isabelle Corbisier (self published) available on internet & best of all at the SF Main Library. Winston Tong’s song “In A Manner of Speaking” has been covered a staggering 13 times (including a heavy metal version). In 2005 Tong & Tuxedomoon played SF for the first time in two decades. Winston continues to create fascinating works to this day & is truly an elixir for other creative types. In a scary world where the force-fed dumbing down runs rampant I thank the stars for the brave & beautiful spirit that is Winston Tong & his willingness & need to keep pushing the proverbial buttons in a gorgeous poetic manner. If you loved him then, you’ll love him now: articulate, humble, thoughtful, political & poetically representing all the outsider artists of the world. Stay strong we will have out day (& our say)! Now, go out & find everything you can from the multifaceted & multi-talented Winston Tong!

The Underground Sound Thursday April 12, 2012 Award Winning Film maker CHRISTINA BECK interview

Date 18 April 2012

Listen in as Meri St. Mary talks with Christina Beck, a LA native who got her start in such cult films as SUBURBIA, Boys Next Door & Dudes all directed by Penelope Spheeris.  Christine pursued  her acting bug by performing in off off off Broadway plays in NYC. Back in LA Christina wrote, directed & starred in such short films as Disco Man & Blow Me.  Christina’s first feature film is entitled PERFECTION (which she wrote, directed, produced & starred) that is on the Festival Circuit where she has been receiving accolades & awards for PERFECTION which deals with “self injury” as a topic of importance (the statistics for women are staggering). Tune in as Christina shares her vision, her journey & the harsh realities of making an independent film: she is funny, humble & down to earth sharing her “labor of love” PERFECTION that just screened at the SF International Women’s FIlm Festival to a packed house with intelligent Q & A afterwards. Christina & I bonded during the earlier punk scene  in Hollywood, so some fun stories ensue! Oh & we forgot to mention we were in a band together TOEJAM w/ Christina, Maggie & myself.  Also the interview is sprinkled with weather reports in NC as the power went out.  PERFECTION is a love story at heart both men & women should see this film!  There is hope & recovery for the “self injury” that afflicts so many.  NOW – go get yer indie film on & enjoy the hell out of Christina’s humor, vision & experience!  Oh & the Damned figure heavily in the soundtrack!!!  PERFECTION! Both illusion & reality as we are all perfect in our own way! Unfortunately, due to the power outage the last ten minutes of the interview are unattainable, however we plugged Christina’s contacts & verbalized the proverbial “love-fest” for each other!!!

The Underground Sound - Thursday February 16 2012 - DINAH CANCER interview

Date 20 February 2012

Listen in as Meri St. Mary talks with Hollywood’s own glamour ghoulie girl DINAH CANCER for the “My Bloody Valentine” special interview.  Dinah has been a forerunner in the whole goth/deathrock scene commencing with the all female Castration Squad, 45 Grave, Vox Pop, Penis Flytrap & on such recordings as Hell Comes To Your House, the singe Black Cross & the LP Autopsy.  Her cackle & humor are irresistible, infectious & original (so all y’all goths she’s influenced – tip your hat to her, altho she’s way to humble to say so).  Dinah is down to earth & shares her journey from Hollywood kid to world renowned trendsetter, she has raised her two daughters in between projects (her music was featured in Return of the Living Dead) as well as being an early child development teacher. Dinah is back in action with new releases out entitled Pick Your Poison (which we play during the interview).  She can hold her own playing with both female & male musicians (& i just want to mention here that Rob Graves was an exquisitely beautiful human being – we forgot to mention that).  Dinah is funny, real & has loads of stories/experience. (Monte Cazazza pipes in a little bit but clicks his pen alot!). In the meantime RUN do not WALK & get the new 45 Grave release PICK YOUR POISON – it’s really good! Now get yer ghoul on, dig yer grave & dig the hell outta Dinah Cancer! She’s good bad not EVIL!
